About Us
The Porirua Harbour and Catchments Community Trust (PHT)
also known as the Porirua Harbour Trust.
Welcome from the Chairperson – Michael Player
Nau mai, haere mai – welcome to the Porirua Harbour and Catchments Community Trust (PHT), also known as the Porirua Harbour Trust.
Since the mid-19th century, increasingly intensive settlement saw the harbour taken for granted, reshaped its natural foreshores and subjected its waters to pollution and increasing sedimentation.
The Trust was borne out of a desire to join with Ngāti Toa as the kaitiaki of the harbour to stop the degradation of the environment and restore its water quality and bio-diversity for the benefit of everyone.
Our mission is simple: to protect and restore the health of our harbour while ensuring it remains a place for people, wildlife, and future generations to enjoy.

Past and Future
The idea for a Trust representing both arms of Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour first emerged from the Pauatahanui Inlet Community Trust (PICT) Action Plan. Established in 2000. It recognised the need for an independent organisation to advocate for the wellbeing of the entire harbour — both the Parumoana (Onepoto )and Pāuatahanui arms
Meet The Trust
The Trust’s forerunner was established in 2011, growing out of earlier community efforts led by the Pāuatahanui Inlet Community Trust (PICT). In 2020/21, the current independent Trust was formed to represent the whole harbour and its catchment.
Today, our trustees are drawn from the community.
