Former WCC Councillor and Porirua Harbour Trust trustee, Peter Gilberd, is drawing our attention to the proposed Petone to Grenada link road that will have a negative impact on a key tributary of the Porirua Stream that feeds into our harbour. Join the locals for a protest walk on Kings birthday…

The Whitireia Park Restoration Group’s winter planting season is starting on 7 June from 9.30am to 12.30pm. They will be planting along the top of the escarpment (in green) to bolster the areas already planted and provide a seed source for the surrounding areas to naturally regenerate. (the orange areas are archaeological sites). Gorse has been cut down in several areas and planting spots have been prepared. The grass is quite short and nicely browned off.

A large area is being left open for people who like to sit, picnic, take photos or access the track down to the coast.

This site can be windy and if the weather doesn’t cooperate check out the group’s facebook page by 8am.

Take several layers of clothing including wind proof jacket, water and a spade if you have one. Some spades will be provided and there will be hot food and drinks available.

The group have just discovered a mātātā/fernbird living across the road from the site so planting will provide more habitat for them.

Carparking is available by the concrete pads.

It’s helpful to attend one of the briefings either at 9.30am or 12.30pm.

Getting there: Follow Takapu Road toward the Takapu Road Substation and look out for KETE signs/flags.

What to bring:

Gumboots if they have them (we are planting around a wetland), or older enclosed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty

Warm clothes

Hat

Lunch, snacks and water

Raincoat

Gardening gloves if you have them

Any medication you may need

Late last year Claire Johnstone and Phil Rhodes were elected as Greater Wellington regional councillors for the Tawa/Pāuatahanui Ward. They have graciously accepted an invitation from the Harbour Trust and the Guardians of the Inlet to address a meeting open to everyone on MONDAY 4 MAY 2026 AT 7.15PM ST MARY’S CHURCH WHITBY.

If you are interested in the health and restoration of the twin arms of our harbour and its contributing streams then come along, listen and pose any questions you may have of our representatives.

With changes to regional councils coming up our councillors may not have much time to make a difference. Do your part in making sure they know what the residents of Porirua and northern Wellington are expecting when it comes to caring for our precious natural environment.

Join Harbour Accord partners in a mid-week clean up of the cbd foreshore on Wednesday 29 April from Noon until 3pm. Kai provided. Wear suitable clothing for the task and sturdy footware/boots/gumboots.

We know from experience that no matter how many clean ups are done there’s always litter to be removed. This is a great opportunity to do your bit with just a few hours of time commitment.

A good opportunity for Porirua people interested in how other Wellington groups go about catchment rehabilitation to go on a guided walk with the Trelissick Park Group. Wear sturdy footwear for wet tracks. Sunday 26 April at 2pm – 3.30pm

Meet in the Ngaio Gorge at Trelissick Park Entrance 5 (see map) Parking: Parking laybys at Entrances 5 and 6. If parking at Entrance 6, walk up Ngaio Gorge Rd to Entrance 5.

The inlet has an overwhelming amount of rubbish to remove so we would love your help.

NEW MEETING LOCATION : Lyttelton Ave opposite Porirua New World look for the KHVB marque/ beach clean up flags will clearly be seen for our meeting point .

Wear old shoes or gumboots if you want to walk out onto the mudflats.
Bags and grabbers will be supplied please bring gardening gloves if you own some .

Behind the Porirua Pak’nSave Parumoana Street. Petone Beach Clean-up and KNZB flags will clearly be seen for the meeting point.
Bags and grabbers will be supplied, please bring gardening gloves if you own some.
If you want to cross the inlet at low tide, be prepared to get wet up to waist height. if you want to stay dry there are plenty of areas to clean. I suggest wearing gumboots in case you want to walk out onto the sand flats as the tides goes out. All ages welcome and children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Led by Mutumutu and Mukukai, kaitiaki of fresh and saltwater for Ngāti Toa, this exhibition aims to share the cultural values, knowledge and enduring relationship of Ngāti Toa, as kaitiaki mana whenua, to the interconnected water sources of this region. A focus is the urgent return to full health of the once teeming ecosystem of Te Awarua o Porirua, the largest estuary in the lower North Island, and all waterways that must continue to sustain life and wellbeing. The protection and care of these taonga is explored through narratives past and present to illustrate the effects of urbanisation and degradation.
